11th Annual Prosperity Ball

First and foremost, on behalf of New Beginnings Support Program, our board of directors and the women we support, I would like to personally extend a very grateful thank you for supporting our 2019, 11th Annual Prosperity Ball fundraiser; it was a great success!  

Our 11th Annual Prosperity Ball fundraiser – Night of Diamonds was held on Saturday November 30, 2019 at the Royal York Hotel and with your generous support our major fundraiser raised $80,000! The money raised went to our Step Into Success Program and our Humber College Program.  

The evening filled with wonderful entertainment, delicious food and wine, and a wonderful collection of auction items that were graciously donated by caring organizations made the night an even greater success. Our Gracious Host for the evening Amanda Lang from BNN/Bloomberg captivated attendees with her wit and charm. She welcomed our participants who attended the event; we were honoured to have her for the past two years. 

It was also an opportunity to showcase what we do and how your support matters! Thank you for working alongside us to improve lives, one family at a time.  

With your help we will continue to restore, transform, and create healthier and stronger families within our communities.  

Our Host- Amanda Lang

We are honoured to have as our Host for the evening, the incomparable Amanda Lang. Internationally recognized Canadian Business Journalist, Best-Selling Author, Entrepreneur and Philanthropist, Amanda believes giving back is a necessity to improving the lives of those in need.

The field of her study was way different from the career she chose but due to her talent and her hard work, she excelled in the field of journalism starting her career in this field from The Globe and Mail in the InfoGlobe unit. She also worked at the National Post as the New York correspondent.

She joined with CNN in New York and reported on the New York stock exchange for America Morning and the financial program of CNN called CNNfn. She came home to Canada and worked for the Business News Network as an anchor. She eventually joined CBS Network as the popular co-anchor for The Lang & O’Leary Exchange alongside Kevin O’Leary.

She currently is the host of the BNN/Bloomberg Network.

As a best- selling author, she leads her wisdom through her books. Her first book- The Power of Why: Simple Questions That Lead To Success published in 2012 did very well and her latest book: The Beauty of Discomfort: How What We Avoid is What We Need, encourages people to do what is necessary despite the fear has sparked a new kind of enthusiasm for people looking to move forward in their lives.

Our Keynote- Michelle-Hastick Cowell

“Coaching Clients Through Life’s Unknowns™” is the slogan of Michelle Hastick-Cowell, Vice President of Wealth & Strategic Management with BKIFG. She is known as “The Coach” to her numerous clients not only for her financial acumen but for her general overview of life, always lending a hand and supporting her fellow people.

She is a decorated professional athlete, Investment Professional. Michelle is a Canadian Record Holder and was the Canadian Champion for 5 consecutive years, with over 6 Canadian Championship gold medals. Throughout her career, Michelle has achieved a number of designations including: Certified Master Coach Practitioner (C.M.C.P), Registered Retirement Consultant (R.R.C), Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (C.D.F.A), Elderly Planning Counselor (E.P.C), and Professional Financial Planning Course . Voted as one of Canada’s top 40 most influential Women in Finance and was featured in the WP Magazine.

Our Board Chair- Stephen Shea

Stephen is the Canadian Managing Partner, Talent for Ernst & Young LLP. He is responsible for leading all facets of the firm’s people strategy for both partners and staff. EY employs approximately 4,500 people across Canada and globally employs approximately 175,000 people. He is a member of the firm’s Inclusiveness Steering Committee where he co-chairs with the Firm’s Chairman and CEO. He is also a frequent speaker on topics related to diversity, inclusion, and human equity at EY and in the business community.

Stephen has provided leadership through counselling, mentoring and sponsorship to people within the firm at all levels. He has a Bachelor of Science (Physiology) from University of Toronto, a Master of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business and is a CPA, CA. Stephen is the Chair of the Board of the New Beginnings Support Program.

Auctioneer- Mike Drolet

Mike Drolet is a Toronto correspondent for Global National, but his job has taken him far from the borders of the Greater Toronto Area. For the past 20 years, Mike has worked in newsrooms across southern Ontario and Quebec covering floods and fires in the provinces, too many natural disasters to list as well as extensive coverage of Canadian soldiers on the front lines in Afghanistan. After graduating from the University of Western Ontario, Mike moved to Wingham, then Windsor, Montreal and now back to his hometown of Toronto.

He has won several national news awards and was nominated for a Gemini for his work covering the 2010 earthquake in Haiti.


Jade’s Hip Hop Academy

Located in Brampton, Ontario Jade’s Hip Hop Academy is an international renowned dance studio specializing in teaching kids and youth authentic hip hop and street dance including Popping, Breaking, Locking, House and Krump. They have performed on Ellen DeGeneres, opened for Michelle Obama, perform half time shows regularly for the Toronto Raptors and Toronto Argonauts and recently also opened for the NBC World of Dance Live Tour.

Under the leadership and choreography of award-winning entrepreneur Jade Jager Clark the Company customizes their performance for each event creating one of kind memorable pieces that have delighted audiences all over Southern Ontario and around the world on YouTube. They provide custom themed performances for corporate; charity and sporting events and their videos have gone viral garnering millions of views on YouTube and social media.

Opera & Pop Singer- David Bonomo

David Bonomo is a 22-year-old tenor from Toronto, that is classically trained. He has been singing classical music for the past 16 years, which was initially inspired by the music of Andrea Bocelli, Luciano Pavarotti and Frank Sinatra. He is created his personal mark in classical/pop music which is being recognized across North America.

David has performed on national television and radio, he also performed at many private/public functions and fundraisers, (including performances at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Muskoka Opera House Theatre, and Canada Day CNE), just to name a few. David is working on an album which captures the old soul within him through classical music, along with his very own classical/pop songs that engage the modern audience. He is available for private parties or corporate functions.

Michael Thorner

He is a musician, composer, and music curator, with experience working as a strategic cross-platform content producer. He operates a music label, MTCD Records, and a music publishing company, Must We Wait 4ever Music. Michael curates the TUNESMITH series, a live monthly celebration of songs and song writing, that provides a safe space for a diverse cross-section of emerging and established artists to showcase or workshop either new original music, or standards from the global songbook.

In December 2016, Michael released a deluxe, limited, signed edition DVD of The ehMTee Show Original Webcast Soundtrack, a homegrown, cross platform, webcast variety program of original songs, standards, and more. Michael is currently working on a solo release of original music.

Alex Cheung

Trained as a classical violinist, Toronto musician Alex Cheung is continuing his journey through many different musical styles and genres. He performs folk, Celtic, pop/rock, country, jazz, R&B and classical music, and is proficient in improvisation and string arrangement. Alex teaches violin, music theory and computer music at his private studio, as well as at University Settlement Music & Arts School in Toronto and at Yip’s Music and Montessori School in Thornhill and Markham.

Over the years, Alex has collaborated with many artists and bands, including Julie Crochetiere, the late Kenny Maclean, the BIG SOUND, Celtic band Up All Night, bluegrass/roots band Often Running, and acoustic 80’s band the McFlies. In 2006, Alex entered the “Shock the Monkey” Remix Competition hosted by Realworld Records and earned an honourable mention by Peter Gabriel.
